I have moved over from WA where I am used to the heat and there is no whinging from me being in a cooler climate.Getting there 4 hours from Launceston or Hobart. We tend to do all our cooking outside and during the winter still sit outside with a fire going. I find the weather moreĬonsistent than Melbourne. I am from the Launceston region on the River Tamar Gabby and I personally dont find the weather that bad. This question was on our discussion forum (which has now been replaced by this blog), and at the time we had a response from Mieke Van de Mollen about her experiences since moving to Launceston. Tinderbox tas temperature free#So don’t be afraid of moving to Tasmania because of the weather – it really is quite reasonable and you can still have an outdoor lifestyle in the warmer months.įeel free to ask any other questions you might have. Tasmania can also be like Melbourne and have 4 seasons all in one day so it does pay to be prepared when going out. Melbourne does get hotter in Summer and not quite as cold in Winter but on average it is fairly similar I think. Personally since you come from Melbourne I don’t think you will find the weather too bad in Tasmania. In fact I have even been known to get sunburnt in Winter on a terrific beach I really like at Binalong Bay on the East Coast of Tasmania, just near St Helens where I have spent a lot of time as a child – my Mums family comes from St Helens. I have been known to dine at an outdoor cafe even in Winter on a nice day. Tasmania can have very nice and pleasant Winter days too with sunshine – it certainly isn’t all gloom and doom and cold weather. Fog however is much more common in Launceston. Hobart can still get fog off the Derwent River – when I was living in NewTown then we sometimes got fogged in first thing in the morning. Launceston can drop below 0 degrees and I would say overnight in Launceston is at least 4 or 5 degrees colder than Hobart. Launceston gets more fog and frost than Hobart and also gets lower temperatures. In terms of Winter Launceston being in a valley is much colder than Hobart. Personally I really like Tasmanian Summer weather as it is nice and warm but not too hot. Both Launceston and Hobart can get temperatures in the 30s but mid to high 20s is more common. Hobart is a bit cooler in Summer than Launceston and tends to have a nice breeze off the Derwent River. ![]() Launceston to me at least, gets hotter in the Summer and is a stiller heat. I also have lived in Hobart for approximately 15 years so can compare the two. I personally grew up in Launceston so can comment on Launceston weather from personal experience. Tasmanian weather is indeed a topic that concerns many people moving to Tasmania or indeed just visiting Tasmania. Thanks for the forum – I hope we can all learn more about Tasmania. Would appreciate it if you could give me some answers. What is the weather really like in Hobart and Launceston – the 2 areas I am considering? How cold is Winter? What is Summer really like? I have visited Tasmania several times and always had a great experience but one thing that concerns / interests me is the real weather. ![]() I currently live in Melbourne, Victoria, but hope to move to Tasmania one day.
